So who am I?

Naomi Brookes Designs owner and designer

I feel most at home in wild places. The open moor, the dell of a woodland with the sunlight filtering down catching the wings of a butterfly, the scrubby sea cliffs of Devon where I live, the playful burbling of a stream meandering through a meadow. These are the places I want to be, where my soul soars free and my sense of me feels filled with awe and delight. Although I live in a small town my heart yearns to wander the wild places, celebrates them, delights in the small myriad wonders that make up this beautiful multitude. I feel stifled in urban places, where crowds and pavement deny this beauty. I make my jewellery to take nature with me, to remind me of its abandon, exuberance and beauty. Where I am free.

Nature’s loss saddens me, I worked in nature conservation for over 20 years trying to stem its loss, trying to ignite that wild delight in others. I grow a garden filled with flowers and plants that feed and nurture nature and my eyes. And I wear my garden, and tokens of natural elements to hold with me that sense of awe, to connect me to the wild places and to anchor my soul to the places that bring me peace and joy.

How do I make it?

With handcrafted jewellery you get something unique. I found it really hard to find pieces of jewellery that I liked, that showed off my personality and my passions. When I discovered Precious Metal Clay I knew I had found the solution. This is a relatively new material that is essential recycled silver particles with water and an organic binder that allows me to sculpt and paint it into the pieces I make. To obtain fine silver I burn off the binder using a blow torch or in a kiln and am left with 99% pure silver! It’s like magic and I am slightly addicted!

Every piece I make starts with something from nature - be that a real leaf, flower, fossil or shell. I then either paint directly onto this or make a mould, depending on what piece I want to end up with and the effect I want. This means that more robust items like fossils are not damaged in making the piece - but you still have an entirely unique natural piece.

Each piece is made with love, care and attention to bring out the best in the natural object or pattern. Most pieces differ from each other as each is made from a unique original piece - so you will literally be wearing a one off - as unique as you are!

I’ve made jewellery for many years, finally settling on a medium which allows me to capture the intricacies and detail of what I love, so its not a mere simulation but an actual memento to hold when I need to ground myself in the place my soul rejoices in.

When I got the opportunity to leave the organisation I had been working for through voluntary redundancy I jumped at the chance. I set up my small jewellery making business and I’ve not looked back - I love it!

I’m also re-training as a Counsellor, something I am also passionate about. I also love to walk and explore the beautiful countryside of Devon where I live and of course spending time with my partner who lives in Dorset! Oh and I really love making things, jewellery most of all - and of course wearing it!!
